I wished there was something else more that I could do for you, Jennifer. Just saying "I am sorry for your loss" can be meaningless - I know about that one when my sister Rachel died. Your friends are well-intented but it doesn't take away the pain. My best advice is to cry when you need to cry. Every tear is not only your own but it is for everyone else who has lost their mom.
MarkIt is a stark reality for all of us to tell our sick family members we love them everytime our eyes meet and look at every detail of their face. Remember their amber eyes or that freckle on their cheek. Feel the texture of their skin. Close your eyes and listen to their voice. Record what you can and listen to what they say. That will be our best memory.
