Can A Rural Carrier Work City Side Too?

Monday, February 4, 2008, 11:32 AM CST [General]

Ok, so it sounds like becoming a TE is not really an option for me.  Is it possible to work the city side along with being an RCA?  Just looking for ways to boost my hours at my own office and "try out" the city side to see if I would like it better or not at all.  I'm wanting to figure out if I want to stay with being an RCA, then I wanna go "whole hog" as they say where I'm from...lol.  If I'm gonna stay an RCA, I'll be going out to buy a RHD something or other in the next couple of months.  City side sounds good because of the pay, benefits and hours....but with being an RCA I have the hope of maybe one day becoming a regular rural carrier....hmmmm....but how long would I have to wait on either side??  ARRRGGHHHHHHHHH!

Ask for a casual appointment. City is a completely different ball game tho, if you have any type of health issues...bad knees or something you better think twice. Just because u do a casual appointment they still have to hire PTFs from the list. You will be a pack mule for maybe $12/hour. They will use and abuse you for the whole 3 months...and your still not guaranteed any xtra hours. As to a RHD..If you got something now you can drive I would leave it at that, until Your absolutely certain the job is for you i wouldnt invest a ton of money in one. If you were a regular sure why not but as a sub Id be wary!

how long have you been an RCA?

city side sucks if you have been rural .. been there done that. hated it and came back.
as a casual you are dumped on every time you go in .. and you get paid as little as possible -11$ for me when i was doing it. you get the worst part of each route and usually you get to stay after and do collections also.

i thought when they moved to TE's that they were getting rid of casual's though... you need to check this before you get your hopes up...

a right side is wonderful if you plan on staying anRCA. less stress on you neck and back and knees and ankles. try to get a 4 cylender if you can ( way less gas you have to put in ) i drive a right side saturn stationwagon. it is wonderful , i fill up about half as much as everyone else in my offfice ..
as far as going regular. i have been an RCA now for 8 years and 5 months. i am next to go full time but dont really know when it will happen. you basically have to have retirement , quitting, firing, or death. in my office i have had a death and a quit. so it can happen but you need to settle in for a long haul.unfortuanatlly.

    hope some of this helped
