    RCA Survival After Mail Count?

Monday, March 24, 2008, 11:35 AM CST [General]

Since this is my very first mail count experience (and might I add, it was a SCARY one), I'm filled with even more questions about my future (or possible lack of it) in the postal service.  Unfortunately from what I'm hearing in my office, many of the routes were downgraded and at least one that I know of was disqualified as a route.  Now I'm hearing rumors of some 24,000 supervisors losing their jobs??  (I do not know if this is valid or not)

Over the past month or so I've only been scheduled to work every Saturday.  My regular route has been changed to an H route now, so I have no idea where that leaves me.  Is it possible that I could be layed off as well, or perhaps just not hardly ever scheduled after the end of April?

I'm considering going and getting a part time job just so I can ensure some semblance of survival until all this is figured out.  I'm not sure what the ground rules are on getting a second job at the post office.  Do I have to answer the phone if they call me in?  Do they frown upon second jobs for RCA's?

It sounds like most offices were hit hard on the mail count, so going to another office, seems like it wouldn't be an option either.

If any regulars or experienced RCA's have any advice for realistic survival at this time, I sure would appreciate it.  Thanks!

how many routes are nin your office ? how many rca's do you have and what number are you on the totam pole?

second job. its a toss up . yes you are required to come in if they call you before say 9 am . they dont have to give you any notice of it either. whinch will reek havok on a second job.

best thing is to find some houses or offices to clean and then you have some flexability in what your hours can be. and you need to sign up for unemployument . i hear you get paid well. i need to check into it too..
we lost severl hours in our office as well . not as bad as most though .

    keep you head up...

The mail count in my office is going to hurt all of our RCA's as well. We used to have 2 'H' routes out of 18, now we have 9! All of the RCA's are going to change our route lists, and we may look for work at other post offices on the side. The problem is, since most offices routes went down, they're not really looking for extra help.

what did you mean they disqualified as a route? even if it drops below 39hrs (H) it is still a regular route if it was not a vacant route at the time of the mailcount and scheduled for consolidation. the carrier is still guaranteed 40 hrs pay until the end of the guarantee period. they should attempt to rebuild substandard routes, but there is no provision to rebuild routes that are above 39hr. so, that said, each route is still entitled to a sub. if you wish to get a second job, you should let your reg & supv know, 9x out of 10, they will attempt to work with you. just remember, there should be a mail count next yr & it's harder to manipulate the volume for 4 wks than 2wks. hang in there!!!
