How far do letter carriers walk each day?

Ever wonder how many miles a letter carrier walks each day?

Albuquerque The Magazine recently celebrated National Postal Worker Day by printing how far some Duke City, NM letter carriers walk on their routes during one day, reports the Postal Service's Southwest Area Update newsletter.

Three carriers were armed with pedometers, and here are the results:

    Amy Munoz
    Letter Carrier, Five Points Station
    28,067 steps, or 5.5 miles

    Phillip Carabajal
    Letter Carrier, airport Mail Facility
    13,780 steps, or 6.5 miles

    Jerry King
    Letter Carrier, Steve Schiff Station
18,697 or close to 9 miles

I wore a pedometer one day when I was running city to just see...made me sick..i never wore it again...but it was more than what any of those reported..but all our city routes are truelly walking routes...the LLV rides are few and far between...lmao..

Did anyone notice that 28,067 steps = appx 5.5 miles but 18,697 steps = appx 9 miles, 9370 steps LESS is 3.5 miles MORE?!! And 14,287 steps LESS is 1 mile MORE?!! Hmmmmm

I figured the differences in steps and mileage were due to each carrier's varying length of steps. Amy, who may be shorter, took more steps, for example.

I wonder how much of that is foot-shuffling, kicking, scuffing, etc....

When I worked at the restaurant, we would wear them at night. Waitresses had a few miles a night also.

That is an interesting question Tom. I could easily see where a carrier could get up to 10 miles a day walking on some routes.
Luckily, I am a clerk and I only log in 2.5 miles. But that is a lot of trips to the break room.
No, booing out there!! I can make clerk jokes.
